MXenes are graphene-like structures derived from the processing of MAX phases. MAX phases are a unique family of layered ternary carbides and nitrides with the general formula Mₙ₊₁AXₙ (n = 1, 2, or 3). Here, M denotes early transition metals from groups 3 to 6, A represents main group elements (such as aluminum, silicon, or gallium), and X stands for carbon and/or nitrogen atoms. These materials combine the best properties of metals and ceramics, exhibiting excellent electrical and thermal conductivity, high mechanical strength, good machinability, and exceptional resistance to oxidation and thermal shock.
